Chinese F1 2012

The F1 cuisine club is still the best club a girl like me can be in. Although I must admit, it's not always that great when you are trying to keep the ever expanding waist-line under control, but a little treat once in a while can't be that bad can it?

The Chinese F1 is always a favourite of mine. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for anything Asian, because when I was younger (for some strange reason) people thought I was Asian. When people think you're a different nationality or culture, I suppose it creates a bit of interest in you. Instead of being annoyed when random Asian tourists stopped me in the Kruger National Park when I was an primary school, or being told by Asian visitors that I reminded them of their daughter, I became fascinated by it.

I began learning a bit more about Chinese and Japanese culture, I gained an interest in Asian cuisine, Chinese, Japanese and Thai. For a short time in my life, if you asked me to cook supper, the only thing I was willing to cook for you was sweet and sour chicken/pork or stir fries.

I suppose because of that stage, that's why I love the Chinese F1.

This year, The Future-Sister-In-Law and her Boyfriend were the team who catered, and they are making a name for themselves and a team to be reckoned with.

The spread which they served up to us was as follows:

The Starter - Tempura prawns and vegetable spring rolls, with sweet chili sauce.
The Main - Sweet and sour chicken with Asian coleslaw, stir fried noodles, and basmati rice
Dessert - Fortune cookies and white rabbit sweets

The starter was perfectly crispy, and as expected, both the spring roll and prawn went fantastically with the sweet chili sauce.

The main was very yummy, with the Asian coleslaw something refreshingly different and textured.

Pudding was a great end after two filling  first courses, and fortune cookies are always fun. We all insisted that one another share their fortunes, and laughed at the ones which sounded either quite truthful, or completely out of character.

All in all, another extremely successful day.

Banana fritters

This one actually deserves some special mention. This little recipe has been such a hit with the F1 cuisine club that we have repeated it for a couple of years now already. I think three times actually!

If you love banana then these are probably for you! We've been known to eat them on their own, or with ice cream! nom nom!

Just think of it, banana, gooey, crispy goodness! YUM! Banana fritters = LOVE!

Ingredients (Serves 6-8):

4 large ripe bananas mashed
6-8 Tablespoons of flour
2 Tablespoons rice or cornflour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda/baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
Vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

Easy-peasy-squeezy! Mix all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl.

Add about a tablespoon at a time to a medium heat pan with the vegetable oil in it and fry until golden brown! Enjoy!

Malaysia... a lil late though

So this is new for me, my very first blog!

Although the malaysian grand prix was before china, it seems i am not as quick as my dear sister to fill peeps in on the fun activities, but i believe the saying is "rather late than never" right? :D So here goes!!

It was the 5th of May, an OK day in Cape Town, but the same could not be said for Malaysia... I had a fantastic little menu planned, a starter,a main and a pudding! Naturally a three course menu was not much to ask because it's a 2 hour race atleast right??  WRONG! I had not even served the main yet when the race was rained out :'(

For those who are interested, the food was:

Luckily it is the company that makes the day and with the usual crowd there, even with the race turning to be a bit of a wash out or as Tamsin puts it, "they were all a bunch of woeses!" it was still enjoyable and i think a success!

Formula 1 Cuisine Club Fun! - China

SO after attending my first ever and, I feel, very successful bachelorette party on Saturday night... it was with a thumping headache and suspicious bruises that I headed to the kitchen on Sunday morning.

I think i was attempting to experience panic that I had overslept by about half and hour but I'm not sure my body was listening to my brain at that stage yet! So HOW relieved was I to see a wonderful blonde man in my kitchen deftly chopping up some fruit and a fantastic mom standing at the microwave urging rice to get nice 'n fluffy!
Honestly bless BOTH of you!
x

This sunday was China at 9:00 in the morning which meant me preparing some sort of chinese breakfast!
And here is what was on the menu!

• First up was "Chinese Fruit Salad"

We made this minus the star fruit tho as I just couldn't find any anywhere! Fruit & Veg is really letting me down lately!
We did put in some pomegranate for prettyness though and it looked great with the lemon rind sprinkled over the top.

•Then I TRIED to make "Eggs in Rice Nests" which should have been simple enough but I'm thinking the oven wasn't hot enough initially so the first few bowls came out with the rice quite dry... *sigh*
It's quite a cool concep tho!
You make a savoury brown rice with chicken stock, then add some flaked almonds and spring onions and "Italian seasoning" (I added nice fresh bean sprouts too!)
Dish into bowls with an indent made in the middle.
Crack an egg into the hole you've made and sprinkle mozzerella around the edges :)
I think if the rice hadn't dried out as much it would have been pretty cool.
I'll definately try it again tho on a smaller scale – 15 bowls popping in and out of an oven was a little intensive for this noob of a kitchen kid!

and finally for something sweet

• Kat's cheeky chocolate springrolls!
Definately the hit of the meal as far as I'm concerned! Kat came over to also save me from myself that morning and was her usual star self!
I also completely understand why she's addicted! they ARE easy to make and yum yum yum!! It's nutella heaven! hmmmmmm....

photo's coming to this post ASAP! x
